National Day of Service: Join the Litter Mob

Monday, September 12th, 2011

September 11 has become a National Day of Service, but if you missed out on volunteering yesterday and/or happen to have free time on a weekday, the Litter Mob will be meeting tomorrow morning to pick up trash in Prospect Park.

Marie notes that it’s also the International Year of the Forests, so why not help out the oldest remaining forest in Brooklyn?

Join the Litter Mob Next Tuesday

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

If you want to see in person how one group can make a difference, join Marie for a Litter Mob in Prospect Park next Tuesday, August 16 at 9am.

The most recent clean-up was the seventh, and they noticed some progress, because the Natural Resources crew have added brush to the paths in the Midwood, which helps keep people out of the secluded areas. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered for all your hard work!

Join Prospect Park Litter Mob on 5/10 for Midwood Cleanup

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Following up on her call for ideas on how to clean up Prospect Park, Marie from 66 Square Feet has arranged a litter cleanup of the Midwood area of the Park on Tuesday, May 10, at 9am. In coordination with the Park’s Natural Resources Crew, trash grabbers, garbage bags, and gloves will be provided.

It’s obviously difficult for some to make it out on a weekday, so if you’ve got a flexible schedule, please consider heading over for this event. Find out more details and RSVP at the 5/10 Litter Mob invite page.

From Greenest Block to Grimiest

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Last August, Vanderveer Place between Flatbush Avenue and East 23rd Street took first place in the residential category in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest. Barely seven month later, residents say they are struggling to keep it that way. According to Courier Life, they’re blaming inconsiderate neighbors on Flatbush Avenue for “dumping everything from household trash to mattresses at the Flatbush end of the tiny street, and smaller pieces of detritus dropped by passersby end up blowing in front of their houses.”

“We sweep our sidewalks and a half an hour later it’s dirty again,” said Nadine Hajjar. “It sabotages everything we do.”

But it’s not just gum wrappers and used coffee cups mucking up the place.

“We have people pulling things out of their apartments — a sofa, lamps, a TV, all on the corner,” said Yvonne Murray, who added that “the furniture places come along with mattresses, and it’s mushroomed into one big mess.”

One attempt to help end the garbage flow was the recent removal of corner trash cans, which people had used illegally for household trash. But as is the case whenever cans are removed, people just drop their litter now. Residents on Vanderveer believe that won’t stop until ticketing of litterers is increased.

Community Board 14 says it is working with the Department of Sanitation on the issue.
